Mikel, Emenike, Enyeama, Others Shortlisted for the Award

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued the shortlists for the 2013 African Player of the Year and the African Player of the Year (based in Africa).

Initially, 25 players were nominated for African Player of the Year category, and 21for the African Player of the Year (based in Africa).

The members of the Technical & Development and the Media Committees reduced the initial list by evaluating each of the players.

Ten players made the cut for the flagship African Player of the Year category, and five for the African Player of the Year (based in Africa).

The Head Coaches of the National Associations affiliated to CAF will vote in their order of preference to decide on the eventual winners of the two categories.

The winners will be announced at the Glo-CAF Awards Gala in Lagos, scheduled for January 9, 2014, Thursday.

The 10 nominees, in alphabetical order, are:

Ahmed Musa (Nigeria),

Asamoah Gyan (Ghana),

Didier Drogba (Cote d’Ivoire),

Emmanuel Emenike (Nigeria),

John Obi Mikel (Nigeria),

Jonathan Pitroipa (Burkina Faso),

Mohamed Aboutrika (Egypt),

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon),

Vincent Enyeama (Nigeria),

Yaya Toure (Cote d’Ivoire).

 

The top five nominees in the African Player of the Year (based in Africa) are:

Ahmed Fathy (Egypt),

Mohamed Aboutrika (Egypt),

Rainford Kalaba (Zambia),

Sunday Mba (Nigeria),

Tresor Mputu Mabi (DR Congo).

It would be recalled that Ivorian Yaya Toure is the reigning African Player of the Year and Mohamed Aboutrika of Egypt for the African Player of the Year (based in Africa).

Manchester City and Cote d’Ivoire midfielder, Yaya Toure, has already won a prestigious award this year, as he was selected as the 2013 BBC African Footballer of the Year.
